As we all know that Matt Cutts tries his best by picking random question of users from support forums, and answers with videos to help wide range of audiences seeking answers for same type of problems. You can also see various videos of Matt Cutts at You Tube Google Webmaster Channel. We have tried to compile all the answers in simple text format related to 301, hope these will help you:

What percentage of PageRank is lost through a 301 redirect?
Loss of PageRank from 301 redirects is same as a link. So it means percentage of PageRank that dissipates through a 301 is currently identical to that dissipates through a link.

What are the advantages of 301 redirects over rel=”canonical”?
301 is a direct instruction for redirecting pages through .htaccess file or webmaster tools while rel canonical is just a strong hint to avoid duplicate contents.

How will Google interpret links to URLs ending with a campaign tag?
Google usually detects they’re irrelevant, but 301, canonical tag or Webmaster Tools can help

How can I get Googlebot to notice a 301 redirect?
301 is one which is automatically noticed by Google, So let Googlebot find it in its own time

Is there an advantage to using rel=”canonical” over a 301 redirect?
Matt advice to use 301s in general as its most useful and used.

Can too many redirects from a single URL have a negative effect on crawling?
One or two is fine, any more than five and Googlebot will probably not follow. Avoid mixing 301 and 302s as well

How do I change domain?
That’s the big decision to make, so you can test first with a subpage and 301 it. Then start with the smallest parts of your site and move it gradually

Is their limit to how many 301′s I can use.
Have as many as you like, but Matt says that you don’t chain more than five

What is the benefit of using the change of address tool in Google Webmaster Tools?
It notifies Google quicker than just 301′s, but do both

What’s your take on “addon domains”?
Matt advices not to make too many small sites and advice to do 301 to main site if you have them. Don’t make multiple sites

How can I merge two sites?
301 redirect each webpage to the new webpage. For correcting back links profile, contact any good links you may have asking them to update their link

Does anchor text carry through 301 redirects?
As per Matt, Anchor text transfer value to 301 redirect sites and say typically yes

In my continuous reading relating to various topic of SEO, Social media, Contents, Link building and Search & Internet marketing I find very good quotes by SEO industry experts. I forget them after reading so decided to make collection here on this for future reading and will like to share with users of SubmitShop UK Blog

“We’re doing a better job of detecting when someone is sort of an authority in a specific space — it could be medical, it could be travel, whatever — and trying to make sure that those rank a little more highly (if you’re some sort of authority or site that, according to the algorithm, might be a little more appropriate for users.)” ~Matt Cutts, Google

Taking another step back … the “*” section is likely much more complex than you really need. When possible, I’d really recommend keeping the robots.txt file as simple as possible, so that you don’t have trouble with maintenance and that it’s really only disallowing resources that are problematic when crawled (or when its content is indexed). My guess is that only /search/ is really problematic (since it puts a significant load on the server), but you’d know your site best.

Finally, keep in mind that the robots.txt file doesn’t control indexing. If you want to prevent URLs from being indexed, you would need to allow crawling, and serve the appropriate robots meta tag (or x-robots-tag header).

By John Mueller Works at Google Switzerland

“It means use whatever is best for your purposes, because you don’t get to horde or conserve any more page rank if you use a 301, and likewise, it doesn’t hurt you if you use a 301.” – Matt Cutts

“Matt, he would wrap content and user experience into one. You need great content that is easy to find. Then link building, SEO, viral, etc gets easier. Long term, social and identity will mean a lot more than they do now. Links still matter more than social signals on Google and Bing. Social has a heavier influence.” Matt Cutts

“The objective is not to “make your links appear natural”, the objective is that your links are natural.” – >Matt Cutts

“Good SEO work only gets better over time. It’s only search engine tricks that need to keep changing when the ranking algorithms change.” – Jill Whalen

“Optimize the sites also for users not only search engines.” – Mohnesh Kohli

“Must check the history of domain name, don’t buy a domain name that was involved in spamming and hacking.” – Aprajita Kohli

“Within search results, information tied to verified online profiles will be ranked higher than content without such verification, which will result in most users naturally clicking on the top (verified) results. The true cost of remaining anonymous, then, might be irrelevance.” – Eric Schmidt

You must have heard of search engine spam or web spam. Recently I read on Google blog “pure spam”. Google has considered it as one type of spam. Sites using the most aggressive spam techniques are classified in this category. Following are considered as “Pure Webspam” :-

Automatically-generated gibberish

Clocking

Scraping content from other websites

Intentionally violation of Google’s Webmaster Guideline

Google is fighting with such pure spam by computer algorithm and manual intervention. If you want to know which site have been found in pure spam and removed from Google Index daily you can see the example here.

Google warning is there Be Careful “We’ve removed some pornographic content and Malware from this demo, but otherwise this is an unfiltered stream of fresh English examples of “pure spam” removals..”

In October 2011 Google changed the classification method and cloaking and sneaky redirect actions were labeled as “Pure spam”. In December 2011 Google start sending notification for Pure spam. In Google index Pure spam is bigger than Unnatural links spam.

Raven is letting go of its tool which he has offered to its clients for last 7 years. There has been alot of talk about Google revoking developers access to the AdWords API who are using data scraped from search engine results pages (SERPs) to display ranking and keyword data for their customers. While Raven has been doing this for years, and says it’s successfully gone through two previous Google audits, Google is now choosing to enforce the anti-scraping provision in its AdWords API terms of service. So given the Google’s new hard line, Raven has chosen to stop displaying the scraped data — SERPs rankings and keywords — within its tool set, in favor of keeping on good terms with Google, and retaining access to the AdWords API.

As stated by them ” Raven has decided to remove unauthorized Google data from our platform. As of 5 p.m. PST (GMT-8) on Jan. 2, 2013, we will no longer offer Google rankings and are eliminating our SERP Tracker tool in its entirety. Also, we will remove all data provided to us by SEMRush. You have until then to include any of that data in your reports.” For more on this visit http://raventools.com/blog/scraped-data-serp-tracker/

In Google blog post by Yong Zhu, from the rich snippets testing tool team, Google released Revised Rich Snippet tool renamed as Structure data testing tool in Webmaster tools.

This seems More accurate rendering of the rich snippets, cleaner User Interface (UI), and translated in many languages like Arabic, French, Spanish, and many more!

However the revised tool is located at same old location with same URL name as before http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets

There are two TAB for this tool

URL - If you have webpage online, enter the URL to check

HTML - if you have webpage under development, add code (limited to 1,500 character limit) however if the page size is more, it makes testing of pages in development much more difficult

I personally like the look of new structured data testing tool which is visual design, it is now more accurate as for as concerned the testing tool to better match how they appear in search results

Attached is the snapshot created for Submitshop

Recently we have seen that Google sending messages to webmasters if there is problem in DNS or Server connectivity.

Google has made some more changes and started giving more detailed break down of these errors:

Lookup error

Timeout

Total DNS errors

Lookup error
DNS Lookup means that Google is not able to access your site due to the fact that your DNS server did not recognize your hostname (such as www.submitshop.com)

Timeout
It means that Google couldn’t access your website due to DNS server did not recognize your hostname (such as www.submitshop.com).

Total DNS errors
Googlebot is not able to crawl or fetch your site because Google is not able to communicate with the DNS server, or because your server had no entry for your site. It may due to server downtime, or DNS routing to your website.

It will be more helpful for webmasters who are non technical with server or DNS related factors and help to reduce down time of website.
